Application of the Toyota Production System Principles to Mass- Customized Product Engineering

This paper describes a system for accomplishing product engineering, called a Product Design Generator (PDG). Four rules for successful product engineering processes are posited by analogy with the Toyota Production System. An overview of the PDG method is presented as well as an industrial case study, which demonstrates the impact and potential for successful implementation of the method. This paper highlights the need to include product engineering as part of the production process in mass-customization applications. In the case study, the PDG reduced the product engineering cycle time by more than two orders of magnitude.
